Southwestern Allows Just 33 Points in Conference Win

The Southwestern University men's basketball team allowed the fewest points of the season by an opposing team on Friday (Jan. 5) night as they defeated the Austin College Kangaroos 52-33.

The Pirates opened the game with a 17-0 run in the first five minutes. Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) had seven during that stretch, while Casey Gorder (San Antonio, TX/Texas Military Institute) added four and Ben Sanders (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) scored six. SU cruised the rest of the way and built its lead as high as 23 points when Gorder hit a pair of free throws early in the second half. After the Pirates' opening run, the `Roos never got closer than 12.

Powell scored a season-high 17 points in the rout, thanks to 4-11 shooting from the floor and a 7-8 mark from the free throw line. He was 2-6 from three-point range and pulled down four rebounds. Gorder led all players with 11 rebounds and also added eight points.

The Pirates out-rebounded Austin 50-24 and held the `Roos to just nine field goals made. SU turned the ball over 18 times compared to Austin's 13 turnovers. Southwestern improves its record to 7-6 overall, 2-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

SU continues conference play on Sunday (Jan. 7) against the Hendrix Warriors in Conway, AR at 12:00 p.m.
