Hester's Game-Winning Layup Propels Pirates Past War Hawks

Hester's Game-Winning Layup Propels Pirates Past War Hawks

ABILENE, Texas — Jacob Hester hit a driving layup with one second remaining to deliver the Southwestern men's basketball team an 87-85 victory over the McMurry War Hawks in a chaotic finish.

In a game with 18 ties and lead changes, McMurry appeared set to send the contest into overtime after a pair of Remy Minor free throws tied the game at 85-85 with six seconds remaining.

The War Hawks attempted to press the Pirates on the ensuing inbounds, sending two defenders to trap Preston Hannah on the sideline. The junior guard read the threat, moving the ball to Hester in open space ahead of the double team. Hester turned McMurry's aggression against it, sprinting the length of the floor at full tilt with the War Hawks' 6-foot-6 forward Michael Imariagbe waiting for him in the paint.

Hester slowed just enough as he neared the free-throw line to pull Imariagbe towards him, hesitating to create an angle for the game-winning layup.

McMurry led for most of the game, taking a 41-33 lead at halftime. However, Southwestern surged in the second half, shooting a scorching 19-for-33 from the field after the break, including 5-for-9 from the 3-point line to overtake McMurry for good on Chris Smith, Jr.'s 3-pointer off a Hester assist with 5:28 remaining.

Smith scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half, shooting 4-for-8 from the field as one of four starters to finish in double figures.

Kyle Poerschke led Southwestern with a career-high 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting, hitting 2-for-3 from the 3-point line and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Poerschke also pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds to give Southwestern a 39-34 advantage on the boards.

Freshman big man Brock Luechtefeld was solid in the middle with 10 points on eight shots to go with four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Josh Jones added 11 points on four shots, hitting both of his 3-pointers.

Southwestern's reserves outscored McMurry's bench 23-16 in a balanced attack led by Hannah and Leo Toussaint combining for 17 points.

Minor led four War Hawks in double figures with 30 points on 11-for-14 shooting. Imariagbe had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Southwestern improves to 1-2 with the win. The Pirates will stay on the road tomorrow for a game against the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys at 5:00 p.m.
