Men sweep strokes; earn Staff of the Year

The Southwestern men had a big day to close out the SCAC Championships. Matt Sluss tied as the highest point getter but lost the tie breaker to be named Swimmer of the Meet, but Jon Duncan and the Southwestern staff captured Men's Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

To go along with the end of year awards, Southwestern snagged first place in the stroke events on the final day. Julian Smith won the 200 back in a time of 1:51.01 for and NCAA B cut. Mickey Scharbrough also posted an NCAA B cut in the 200 breast with a first place finish in a time of 2:05.17. To finish the stroke sweep, Matt Sluss won the 200 fly in an NCAA B cut time of 1:52.49.

Ty Lapinski also finished third in the 1650 free in a time of 16:47.36, cutting 22 seconds off his seed time. Oliver Sale finished seventh in 17:30.30 and Josh Van Houten eighth in 18:03.53.

Alex Villarreal finished third in the 200 back in 1:53.15 for an NCAA B cut and Andy Seymour was just outside the B cut with a fourth place finish in 1:57.12. Simmon Belianeh finished third in 46.30 in the 100 free while Simon Gersib took fourth in the 200 breast (2:11.02). Shelby Hall also brought home 15 points for Southwestern with a fourth place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.54.

Closing out the night, the men's 400 free relay finished in second place. The relay of Glover, Belaineh, Sluss and Townsend posted a time of 3:06.77, six seconds faster than their seed time.

On the women's side, Alex Morris opened the evening with a seventh place finish in the 1650 with a time of 18:37.06. Natalie Lesnick wrapped up her tough championship with a sixth place finish in the 200 back in 2:10.03.

Madison Doty took seventh in the 100 free in 54.40 while Taylor Adams finished in fifth in the 200 breast in 2:34.04. Marissa Byrd and Sarah Hachar also had top eight finishes in the event with Byrd finishing seventh in 2:35.97 and Hachar eighth in 2:38.33.

Kenley Gaynor had the highest finish of the night for the Pirate women, taking second in the 200 fly in a time of 2:13.76. The women's 400 free relay of Doty, Nava, McCormack and Lesnick closed the championships with a third place finish with a time of 3:39.08.

The men finished in second place overall with 843 points while the women finished in third with 646 points.
