Pirates open season with dominating win

Southwestern played host to Wayland Baptist on Saturday to open their 2014-15 swimming and diving season. Both teams cruised to easy wins with the men winning 183-84 and the women 188-60.

Julian Smith wasted no time getting his name on the record board with an SU record times of 53.25 in the 100 back and 1:56.57 in the 200 back, earning first place in the events. Alex Villarreal wasn't far behind in the 100 back, earning second place with an impressive time of 54.49.

Matt Sluss took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.65 and Shelby Hall in the 500 free in 5:03.03. It was a one-two finish for Southwestern in the 50 free. Lucas Kahn took first in 22.05 and just narrowly out-touched Simmon Belaineh who finished in 22.22. Belaineh got his first place finish, however, in the 100 free, finishing in 49.17 while Kahn came in second in 49.85.  

Julian Smith finished in 2:00.51 and in first in the 200 IM while Ty Lapiniski posted a 2nd place finish with a time of 1:50.19 in the 200 free. The 200 free relay of Kahn, Belaineh, Sluss and Kline snagged first place in a time of 1:28.21.

The Southwestern women had a big day themselves with numerous first place finishes. The 200 free relay (Doty, Nava, McCormack, Frederick) and the 200 medley relay (Doty, Lesnick, Gaynor, Nava) both took first place in 1:44.44 and 1:56.85 respectively.

Individually, Alex Morris won first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:39.07 and Madison Doty won the 200 free in 2:02.72. Ryan Lawley had a pair of first place finishes in the 100 back and 200 back with times of 1:04.25 and 2:19.89.

Blythe Nava won the 50 free in 26.26, Kenly Gaynor won the 100 fly in 1:03.23 and Natalie Lesnick took first in the 200 IM in 2:19.18. Madison Doty also won the 100 free in 56.89 and Abby Miller won both 1 meter and 3 meter diving with 149.12 points and 164.75 points.

Southwestern remains at home to face Austin College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
