Men's Basketball Set for Saturday Matchup with Rival Trinity

The Southwestern University men's basketball team heads to San Antonio, TX on Saturday (Jan. 13) to face the Trinity University Tigers as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play rolls on.

The Pirates and Tigers will tip-off at 8:00 p.m. following the women's game, which starts at 6:00 p.m. SU enters the game with an 8-6 overall record, 3-1 in SCAC while Trinity is 7-7 overall, 2-2 in conference.

Last season, Trinity won both game between the two teams including a 77-58 win in San Antonio. Southwestern's last win in the series came during the 2004-05 season in Georgetown, TX when the Pirates downed the Tigers 63-60.

. SU is fresh off a 2-0 conference road trip in which they defeated Austin College 52-33 followed by a 57-43 victory over Hendrix College. TU, facing the same two teams, posted a 1-1 record with the loss coming to Hendrix, 63-45.

Junior guard Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) led the team in scoring over the weekend, averaging 14.5 points per game. In the win over Austin, he scored a season-high 17 points on 4-11 shooting while also going 7-8 from the charity stripe. Powell also added four rebounds in the contest.

For the Tigers, Mike Gilb was their top offensive player on the road trip. The senior center scored 11 in the win over Austin and had nine in the loss at Hendrix.

The Tigers own just a 2-4 record on their home floor this season while Southwestern is 3-2 on the road. This will be the second trip of the season to San Antonio as the Pirates took part in the Trinity/Southwestern Thanksgiving Classic. SU went 1-1 in the tournament, defeating the University of Chicago and losing to FDU-Florham.
