Southwestern Struggles in 18 Point Loss to Polar Bears

Southwestern University's men's basketball team dropped its first game at the Trinity/Southwestern Classic to Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Dec. 29) in San Antonio, TX by a score of 62-44.

The Pirates fell behind 12-0 and did not score until more than six minutes in to the game. SU followed with a 16-2 run, capped by a Travis Barber (Houston, TX/Klein HS) jumper, for a 16-14 lead at the 9:37 mark in the first half. It would end up as the team's only lead of the game. SU trailed at the half by 10. In the second half, the Pirates never got closer and trailed by as many as 21.

Barber led the team in scoring and rebounding with eight and five. Sophomore Anthony Cox (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound HS) finished with seven points and four rebounds. Cox also led the team in assists with four and steals with three.

ONU out-rebounded the Pirates, 42-28. Southwestern shot just 34.6 percent (18-52) from the floor and only 16.7 percent (3-18) from three-point range.

The Pirates fall to 5-4 on the year while Ohio Northern improves to 8-3.

SU will take on Wabash College on Sunday (Dec. 30) at 1:00 pm in San Antonio.
