STRONG SECOND HALF LIFTS PIRATES PAST MARIAN

Southwestern University took advantage of a second half run and downed Marian College 67-56 in the Southwestern/Trinity Classic on Thursday night in Georgetown, TX.

The Pirates started the game strong, going up 12-6 early in the first, including two three pointers from junior guard Zach Bergstrom. Marian mounted a run of their own, tying the game at 14 half way through the first half and eventually took the lead with 7:20 remaining in the period. The rest of the first half would be a back and forth contest consisting of 2 ties and 3 lead changes, but Marian would go into the half up by 2.

Southwestern came out of halftime firing on all cylinders and took the lead back just two minutes into the second half. The Pirates went on a 15-0 run, including 8 points from junior guard Travis Barber, to go up 43-33 and would never trail for the remainder of the game.

The Pirates were led by Bergstrom who shot 50% from the field and behind the arc. He finished with 17 points on 6-12 shooting, 4-8 from three-point. Senior forward Andrew McDonald was perfect from the free throw line (6-6) and went 4-6 from the field to contribute 14 points in the win. McDonald also recorded a team high 7 rebounds on night.

The win moves the Pirates to 5-3 on the season. They will next take on Lakeland College in the second game of the Southwestern/Trinity Classic at 7:00 p.m. in Georgetown, TX on Friday, December 19th.
