Dustdevils Hand Southwestern 63-48 Setback

The Southwestern University men's basketball team fell to the Texas A&M International Dustdevils on Saturday (Dec. 9) evening in Georgetown, TX by a score of 63-48.

The Pirates held their only lead of the game in the first minute as senior Casey Gorder (San Antonio, TX/Texas Military Institute) hit a jumper in the paint to go ahead 2-0. TAMIU's Chris Swan then followed that with a pair of three-pointers and a layup to give the Dustdevils an 8-5 lead. SU was able to get as close as three four different times in the first half but dropped further behind as play progressed. TAMIU upped its lead to double-digits with just under three minutes on the clock and held a 33-21 lead at the half.

In the second half, Southwestern got as close as 10 with a Gorder jumper at the 16:54 mark. The Dustdevils pulled away to their largest lead of the contest when they led 63-39 with 2:44 to play. The Pirates then ended the game with a 9-0 run that included 7-7 shooting from the charity stripe.

Junior Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) was the Pirates' top scorer with nine points. He also led the team with four assists while also contributing a block and a steal. Gorder scored eight points and pulled own a game-high seven rebounds.

The Pirates managed to shoot just 38.1 percent from the field, 29.2 percent in the first half, while the Dustdevils shot at a 43.4 percent clip. TAMIU held a 34-26 advantage on the boards and forced Southwestern in to 13 turnovers while only committing eight.

Southwestern will have nearly a three week break until the next game when the Pirates host the SU Classic and take on Swarthmore College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 29).
