Poor Shooting Dooms the Pirates in Loss to the Crusaders

The Southwestern University men's basketball team lost for the second time this season on Tuesday (Nov. 28) to the University of Dallas by a 58-46 margin.

The Pirates were just 16-48 from the field, 3-7 from three-point range, for a 33.3 field goal percentage. Dallas, meanwhile, shot at a 47.5 percent clip and made 6-16 three-pointers.

Southwestern didn't trail during the first 11 minutes of the game, building their lead as high as seven with 9:55 left in the half. From that point on, the Crusaders went on a 22-4 run to end the half with a 28-17 lead.

In the second stanza, Dallas maintained a double-digit lead throughout. The largest lead of the game came at 8:11 when Alex Moorehead hit a pair of free throws to put UD up by 23. The Pirates then closed the game by out-scoring the Crusaders 20-10 over the final 10 minutes.

Junior Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) was 4-10 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line for a team-high 13 points. He also had three assists, two steals and one block. Senior Casey Gorder (San Antonio, TX/Texas Military Institute) added 12 points for the Pirates and led the team with five boards.

As a team, SU shot 84.6 percent from the charity stripe, connecting on 11-13 free throw opportunities. The Pirates forced 16 turnovers and were out-rebounded 28-24. Southwestern also recorded nine steals.

Southwestern opens conference play on Friday (Dec. 1) as they host Millsaps College in Georgetown, TX at 8:00 p.m.
