Pirates SCAC Record Falls to 3-3 on the Year with Loss to Centre

The SU men's basketball team was held to a season-low 38 points on Friday (Jan. 19) in a loss to the Centre College Colonels in Danville, KY.

The Colonels jumped out to a 10-0 lead before SU got on the board with an Andrew McDonald (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) jumper nearly seven minutes in to the game. The Pirates fell behind by 13 with 9:04 on the clock but then scored nine straight points to cut the score to 20-16 with just over five minutes in the half. Centre took a 28-20 lead in to the half.

In the second stanza, Centre extended its lead. The Colonels held their largest lead of the game when John Patterson hit a layup with 4:58 to go, capping a 16-0 run that put Centre ahead 53-29. Southwestern scored just 18 points in the half as the buzzer sounded with the score at 55-38.

McDonald, a sophomore forward, scored a team-high 12 points on 6-13 shooting. He led the team in rebounds as he pulled down a career-high six boards. Junior Goran Stojcic (Houston, TX/Stratford HS) was the Bucs' second-leading scorer with eight. Stojcic was 3-7 from the floor and 2-3 from three-point range.

The Pirates connected on just 31.9 percent for the game and just 27.8 percent from behind the arc. The Colonels out-rebounded SU 39-27 and made 41.7 percent of their shots from the floor.

Southwestern falls to 8-8 on the year and 3-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action. Centre improved to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in conference.

The Pirates take on the DePauw University Tigers on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 8:00 p.m. in Greencastle, IN.
