Southwestern University used an explosive second half to easily handle the University of Dallas on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates defeated the Crusaders 85-60.

After a first half that saw 3 ties and seven lead changes, the Pirates found themselves up by only 9 points, 26-35, at halftime to the Crusaders.

In the second half, the Pirates wasted no time mounting a lead. They started the period on a 18-4 run to go up by 23 just 6 minutes into the second half. Sharp shooting helped the Pirates maintain and extend their lead and they never allowed the Crusaders within 17 points.

Southwestern shot 53.7% (29-54) from the field and 52.2% (12-23) from beyond the arc for the game.

Junior guard Zach Bergstrom led the Pirates with 24 points in just 21 minutes of play. He was 7-12 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range. Bergstrom was followed by the equally strong play of sophomore guard Nick Caputo who scored 18 points in 16 minutes on the afternoon. Caputo went 6-8 from the field and was perfect both beyond the arc (4-4) and from the free throw line (2-2).

The win improves Southwestern to 9-5 overall. They return to conference action at Rhodes College on Friday, January 16th at 6:00 p.m.
