Three Pirate Men Earn All-SCAC Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – A total of three from the Southwestern University men's basketball team were named to the 2017-18 All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Team on Saturday evening at the site of the SCAC Championships in Colorado Springs.

Sophomore forward Brandon Alexander led with an All-SCAC Third Team selection while fellow sophomores Kyle Howard and Ryan Wheeler were All-SCAC Honorable Mention picks.

Alexander, a sophomore out of Inez, Texas, led the Pirates in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game while shooting a team high 47.5% from the field and 39.7% from three point range (7th in SCAC). Alexander was second on the team in rebounds with 132 on the year while recording 20 steals and five blocks. 

One of Alexander's biggest games came against Trinity on January 13th as the sophomore went off for 32 points including seven three pointers to go with eight rebounds and two steals. Alexander scored 26 points on three seperate occasions against Texas-Dallas on November 25th, Dallas on January 21st, and Ausitn College on February 8th, all resulting in wins for SU.

Howard, a sophomore out of Katy, Texas, played in 23 games and averaged 8.7 points per game while leading the Pirates in steals with 1.5/game.

Howard really began to shine during the conference season, elevating his game. Howard had a huge game against Texas Lutheran on February 16th, finishing with 22 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. He also had a 21 points, five steal outing against Schreiner on February 2nd.

Wheeler, a sophomore out of Flower Mound, Texas, played in 25 contests and was third on the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game and was behind only Howard in steals with 1.2/game. He shot 43.3% from the field and 36.6% from behind the arc.

Wheeler had a breakout year for the Pirates especially in scoring. His biggest outing came on January 2nd as he went for 24 points including 7 of 11 from behind the arc against Howard Payne. He also scored 24 in a road win on January 19th against Colorado College, notching four steals in that contest as well.

Southwestern ended the season at 10-15 overall under fourth year head coach Janson Hightower.
