Men’s basketball battles back to defeat Schreiner
Southwestern trailed by eight points with six minutes to play and closed the game on a 23-8 to beat Schreiner University on Saturday night.

It was a tight first half but Schreiner led most of the way and took a 34-31 advantage into the locker room after Stevan Gurrero hit a three with nine seconds remaining.

Schreiner made the first basket of the second half but Southwestern began to chip away at the deficit, tying the game with 15:13 to go 38-38. After multiple ties and lead changes, Schreiner grabbed the reigns and went on a 9-0 run to lead 46-54 with 6:28 to play.

Zach Whitlock's layup kick started a Pirate run and with two minutes to play Southwestern tied the game 59-59 on Chris Molina's three. SU's defense forced a key turnovers on the next Mountaineer possession and Karrey Sanders made them pay with a layup to put the Pirates on top 61-59.

SU closed the game from the free throw line, draining 6-6 in the final 38 seconds.

Southwestern shot 40% from the floor and 37% from three point range and was led by Adrian Johnson's 14 points. Sanders added in 12, Molina 11 and Lee 10. Guerrero led Schreiner with 25 points as the Mountaineers shot 39% from the floor and 20% from long range.

The Pirates improve to 13-7 on the year and 8-3 in league play while Schreiner falls to 11-11 overall and 4-7 in the SCAC. Southwestern remains in third place in the SCAC and with four games to play have secured a spot in the SCAC Conference Championship.
