Severson named SCAC Character & Community honoree

CARSON SEVERSON OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior from Flower Mound, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending January 4, 2015.

The most well-known men's basketball player at Southwestern this year is not the one that scores the most points or grabs the most boards. This year it is Carson Severson. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee President has a laundry list of organizations in which he is a member of and yet spearheaded multiple community service efforts this year alone.

Carson has helped the Southwestern University SAAC grow into a difference maker in the community through their partnership with the Special Olympics and have been the sounding board for student-athletes on multiple issues affecting their competition and academic life both on campus and with the NCAA.

As an active member of his fraternity and through SAAC, Carson has been the poster-child for leading by example. The senior has focused, not only on his studies, but also on how he can leave SU and Georgetown a better place during his four years.

"I encourage everyone to get out and get involved," says Severson. "We are really lucky to be student-athletes and go to such great schools. Give back to the community and get involved and make friendships because that is what it is all about."

The Character & Community award, established prior to the 2009-10 academic year, is an effort by the SCAC to honor the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
