Men’s Basketball Seizes Revenge with One Point Win

IRVING, Texas - Travis Kurtz's layup and defensive rebound with seconds left on the clock gave Southwestern the 62-61 win over the University of Dallas on Sunday afternoon.

Southwestern took control right from the start with Kurtz's three-pointer on their opening possession, and never trailed in the first half. The strong Pirate defense held UD scoreless through the opening three and a half minutes and pulled ahead by 19, 39-20, with five minutes remaining in the first half.

A short scoring spurt by the Crusaders sent SU into the locker room up by only 10, 39-29.

Southwestern started out strong as the second half got underway and led by 16 just two minutes into the second half. UD then went on a 19-6 run to pull within five, 54-49, with 5:46 to go, giving the Pirates visions of their last encounter with the Crusaders.

The game was brought even for the first time since the opening tip, 60-60, on a three by Kym Malone with 36 ticks remaining. The Pirates answered the next time down the floor as Adrian Johnson found Kurtz for the game-winning layup. UD had one final look at the hoop and was fouled in the process. Aaron Wyatt stepped to the line and made the first to pull Dallas within one, 62-61, but missed the back end. Myers secured the rebound as the clock hit zero to give the Pirates the win.

Southwestern shot 44% from the floor and three-point range while UD went 41% from the floor and 29% from long range. Kurtz, Johnson and Myers all led Southwestern with 11 points while UD's Tanner Bruffey led all scorers with 15 points.

The Pirates improve to 8-11 on the year and 4-6 in the SCAC while UD falls to 11-8 overall and 6-4. Southwestern begins the third and final round of conference play this weekend as they return home to face Centenary College on Friday night at 8 pm.
