WELL-ROUNDED PIRATE SQUAD EARNS WIN OVER AUSTIN COLLEGE

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern used solid play on both ends of the court to defeat Austin College 69-63 at home on Friday night, snapping a nine-game losing skid. SU shot 52.1% from the floor and held the 'Roos to just 37.7% in the win.

Austin College got out to a quick start, going up 4-0 in the opening minute, but a lineup change followed by a steal out top and layup by Michael Cantu sparked a 14-1 Southwestern run to put the Pirates up by nine, 14-5 with 13 minutes to play in the first half.

The 'Roos came back within three, 16-13 at the midway point but SU was able to put together another strong run to push their lead to 15, 32-17, with just under four minutes remaining in the half. The Pirates headed into the break with a 10 point lead in hand, 32-22, after going scoreless for the final three minutes.

SU started out strong in the second half to pull ahead by 13, 39-26, and maintained near a double digit lead through the nine minute mark. Austin College started to mount a comeback and pulled with three points, 52-49, after a Walter Phillips layup with 6:28 left on the clock.

Nick Caputo (pictured) was fouled his made layup and converted his free throw to put the Pirates back on top by five, 54-49. Southwestern was able to keep the 'Roos at an arm's length for the remainder of the game with Robbie Hanley's three pointer with just over a minute remaining sealing the 69-63 win.

Caputo led all scorers with 18 points on 7-12 shooting while Hanley chipped in 14 and Logan Hurley 13. Hanley and Hurley tied for a team high eight rebounds each. Austin College had three players lead with 15 points each.

With the Southwestern improves to 5-18 on the year, 3-11 in the SCAC, and maintain a outside shot at making the conference tournament. They face second place Colorado College on Sunday afternoon, the final home game for three seniors; Hanley, Caputo and Jon Brown.
