RHODES DEFEATS SOUTHWESTERN 71-66 FOR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Pirates were unable to put together a big enough run in the second half as they fell 71-66 at Rhodes College on Saturday evening. The win was the first in the SCAC for the Lynx.

Southwestern jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the opening tip but couldn't hold onto it as the Lynx built up a nine point lead of their own with six minutes remaining in the first half. James Davenport's jumper with 3:37 to play in the first sparked a 9-0 run that tied the score at 36 heading into halftime.

Free throws by each team marked the start of the second half and SU led briefly, 47-48, after Nick Caputo's three pointer with 15:33 to play. That was the last time the Pirates had control of the game as Rhodes stayed just out of reach.

Caputo led the way with 22 points while Michael Cantu chipped in 15 and Logan Hurley added 12.

The Pirates had seven more shot attempts thanks in part to committing five fewer turnovers and snagging two more offensive rebounds,  but made one fewer field goal and seven fewer from three point range.

Southwestern currently sits at 5-14 on the year and 2-9 in the SCAC. They remain on the road to face Hendrix and Millsaps next weekend, two games that if won could put the Pirates in the SCAC Conference Tournament.
