BRITONS DOMINATE FINAL MINUTES TO STEAL VICTORY FROM PIRATES

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Albion College closed the game out on a 19-8 run to defeat Southwestern University 74-63 in the final game of the Southwestern/Trinity Classic on Saturday night. The loss drops SU to 3-6 while Albion improves to 5-4.

The first half was evenly balanced with neither team able to take a commanding lead and the score remained tied 32-32 heading into the break.

Southwestern was much better from the field in the first half, shooting 44% from the floor and holding Albion to 36.7% but were out-rebounded by eight in the opening frame 24-16. Robbie Hanley (pictured) had a great first half for SU, scoring 12 points and pulling down six rebounds.

Things remained close at the start of the second half until the duo of Nick Atiee and Jonathan Brown pushed the Pirates up by seven, 44-37 with 13:40 remaining in the game.

The Briton's perimeter shooting got them right back in the contest as they hit four, three pointers to pull ahead by three, 51-48 with just under 10 minutes to play.

Hanley's three pointer at the six minute mark gave Southwestern the lead once again as they went up by one, 58-57. Two straight three's by Chris Hutton gave Albion a five point lead, 63-58 with 4:32 remaining. The Britons began to make their free throws to pull away and then closed out the game for the 74-63 win.

Albion had 22 points off turnovers and 18 second chance points in the contest while SU had just 9 off turnovers and four second chance points. 

Hanley led in points and rebounds with 22 and 8. Nick Caputo chipped in 11 points. Albion's Hutton had 25 points to lead all scorers.

Southwestern breaks for the holidays and then returns to action on December 28th against Nebraska Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.
