BALANCED TEAM EFFORT GIVES PIRATE DOUBLE OT VICTORY

KERRVILLE, Texas- Nine players scored for Southwestern, four in double figures, as the Pirates defeated Schreiner University 104-103 in double overtime on Sunday evening. The win is the first of the season for SU and improves their record to 1-2.

Southwestern took control of the game quickly and led by as many as 19 points after a Scott Ryan three-pointer with 6:22 remaining in the first half. Schreiner never led after the opening minutes as the Pirates were up by 12 points, 41-29, heading into the break.

Schreiner's Prince opened the second half with a three that spawned a run by the Mountaineers that brought the game even, 41-41 five minutes into the second half. The lead changed hands numerous times through the closing minutes of regulation. Nicholas Atiee gave Southwestern a three point lead with 18 seconds remaining, but Schreiner's Smith hit a three on the return possession for the tenth tie of the game. Nick Caputo's three at the buzzer bounced out as the teams headed into overtime.

After the 13th tie of the contest Schreiner built a four point lead, 89-85, with under a minute to play but Southwestern continued to battle and closed the first overtime on a 6-2 run. Caputo's last second shot fell this time to even the count 91-91 and force the second overtime.

The Pirates went ahead early in the final frame on a pair of free throws by Logan Hurley but the Mountaineers came back with a vengance and went up by six points, 101-95, with 1:05 to play. SU jumped to action sparked by a jumper by first-year Michael Cantu in which he was fouled and made the free throw bringing Southwestern within three.

A pair of Schreiner free throws by Battle gave the Mountaineers a five point lead again with 39 seconds to play. Caputo missed the front end of his free throw, made the second and then drained a three pointer the next time down the floor to cut the lead to one with 19 seconds.

Southwestern immediately fouled Stewart and put him on the line and the strategy worked as Stewart missed both free throws. Fifteen seconds was all that was left on the clock for the Pirates to advance the ball and get a shot off and was more than enough for the Pirates as Cantu drained the game winner with six ticks left on the clock.

Caputo led the Pirates with 28 points on 10-23 shooting. Hurley was close behind with 22 points while Cantu and Robbie Hanley (pictured) chipped in 17 and 13 respectively.

As a whole Southwestern was hot from the floor, shooting 55.4% from the floor and 40.9% from long range.

SU remains on the road for their next contest as they head to Belton, Texas to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
