TOUGH FIRST HALF HAUNTS PIRATES

TOUGH FIRST HALF HAUNTS PIRATES

AUSTIN, Texas - Concordia University shot 50% from the floor in the first half and mounted an 18 point lead over Southwestern as the Pirate men's basketball team fell 99-71 on Friday night.

The Pirates started out well and held close through the opening five minutes but went through a scoreless four minute stretch, allowing the Tornadoes to mount an eight point lead, 18-10, with 14 minutes left to play in the first half.

Even with Southwestern in the bonus with more than 11 minutes to play in the first half they were unable to close the gap from the line as CUA continued to pile on the points. As the first half came to a close SU found themselves down by 18, 54-36.

The second half was a much better showing for Southwestern but the lead was unsurmountable as the Pirates were unable to score beyond the arc in the second half and shot just 23.5% from long range for the game. Concordia's hot shooting continued as they shot 45.9% from the field in the second half and 48.1% for the game.

Logan Hurley was hot once again for Southwestern as he led all scorers with 27 points on 10-16 shooting from the field, 1-2 from three-point range and 6-7 from the free throw line. He was also the leading rebounder for SU with nine boards. Sophomore Demetrice Spearman chipped in 10 points.

Concordia had five players in double figures in the win.

Southwestern remains on the road as they continue to search for their first win of the season. They head to Kerrville, Texas on Sunday to face Schreiner at 5:00 pm.
