PIRATES SET SIGHTS ON SCAC TOURNAMENT, FACE DEPAUW IN FIRST ROUND

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern men's basketball team has
earned a bid to the SCAC tournament after finishing 16-9 overall
and 9-7 in the SCAC. The Pirates will enter the tournament as the
third seed in the West and face DePauw University (18-7, 11-5), the
number two seed in the East, on Friday at 8:00 pm in Jackson, Miss.
The Pirates and Tigers have met once this season with DePauw
narrowly beating Southwestern at home by seven, 68-61. SU fell
behind early in that contest, going behind by 18 points heading
into halftime, but turned up the heat in the second half and pulled
within four points with four minutes remaining. Southwestern was
never able to take over the lead, however.
Statistically, the two teams couldn't be more similar. DePauw is
shooting 46% from the field on the season and 36.7% from
three-point range but average 14 turnovers a game where as
Southwestern is averaging 43% from the floor and 33% from three
point range and average 13 turnovers a game. The Pirates average
more than two rebounds more per game and both teams average about
6.5 steals per game.
DePauw has three players, all on ther perimeter, averaging in
double-digits, led by Steve Lemasters' 12.4 points per game. Sean
Haseley and Tony James are close behind with 11.7 and 10.5 points
per game respectively. For Southwestern the scoring threats are all
over the court with four players averaging in double-digits. Junior
Jonathan Brown leads the pack on the inside with 13.6 points per
game while junior Nick Caputo is close behind at 12.6 points per
game from the perimeter. Perimeter players senior Zach Bergstrom
averages 11 per game while senior Travis Barber averages 10.7.
