PIRATES SURVIVE SEWANEE SCARE

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern hung onto the lead and made free throws down the stretch to seize the 64-56 victory over Sewanee in SCAC men’s basketball action on Friday night. The win improves SU to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference while the Tigers fall to 3-11 on the year and remain winless at 0-6 in SCAC action.

Southwestern was plagued with turnovers early, committing nine in the first half alone, allowing Sewanee to mount a nine point lead, 13-22, with 6:30 remaining in the period. An 8-0 run by the Pirates following a time out pulled SU within one, 21-22 with 3:33 to go and Southwestern went into the break down two, 25-23.

A rejuvenated Southwestern squad returned from halftime and quickly pushed ahead by ten, 39-29, with just under 12 to play. Sewanee continued to hang around and were able to close the gap go three, 51-48, with 3:09 remaining on a three-pointer by Andrew Little, but junior Nick Caputo’s two three-pointers in the next 40 seconds dashed the Tigers’ hopes and allowed SU to close out the game from the free throw line.

Senior Travis Barber led the way with 18 points while senior Zach Bergstrom and Caputo had 15 each. Little was the lone Tiger in double digits, leading all scorers with 20 points.

Southwestern shot 42.6% from the floor and 36.8% from beyond the arc while holding Sewanee to 40% from the floor and 34.8% from the line. The difference maker in the game was SU going 17-28 from the free throw line while the Tigers were just 4-8.

The Pirates continue their home stand with a game on Saturday night against Oglethorpe University. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
