WIN STREAK SNAPPED BY ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

WIN STREAK SNAPPED BY ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Pirates hit a cold shooting day and dropped their second game of the season, 91-76 to a hot Illinois Wesleyan team. Southwestern shot just 36% from three point range for the game while IWU was 59% from long range including a perfect 6-6 in the second half.

Southwestern came out of the gates quick and mounted a four point lead before Illinois Wesleyan jumped to action and went on a 16-2 run to go up by 10, 16-6, with 14 and a half minutes to play in the first half.

The Pirates hung close, however, and put together a 12-1 run to pull within three points, 29-32, with a little over five minutes remaining in the period. IWU’s Zimmer drained two threes within thirty seconds of each other to push the lead back up to ten, 29-39, just one minute later.

A quick sprint to halftime had the Pirates within four, 42-38, heading into the break and two minutes into the second frame SU tied the game up 46-46.

Southwestern remained within striking distance until IWU broke it open with six minutes remaining and cruised to the 16 point win.

Senior’s Travis Barber and Zach Bergstrom led the way for Southwestern with 17 and 16 points respectively. Junior Nick Caputo chipped in 11 points in the loss. IWU’s Zimmer had a game high 35 points.

Barber and senior A.C. Cox were named to the All-Tournament team for their consistent play over the two game stretch.

With the loss Southwestern falls to 8-2 on the season. They will return home this coming weekend and return to SCAC conference action on Saturday, January 2nd against Colorado College at 3:00pm.
