Women's Cross Country Finishes 5th in SCAC

GEORGETOWN, Texas – In a race that saw the top 25 runners be from just two schools including 16 from the event champion, it was a hard day to put up a strong point finish for the remaining teams, but the Southwestern University women's cross country team did their best and finished in fifth place at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Colorado College finished with a perfect 15 points, which is the lowest a team in cross country can get by way of sweeping the first five podium spots. Colorado College did even better than that and had the first nine positions as well as 16 out of its 29 runners finishing in the top 25.

Trinity University finished in second place with 50 points.

Southwestern's Rachel Chiella and Breanna Steele ran the 5-kilometer course that they've called their home training course in times of 25:08.1 and 25:17.2, respectively. Chiella claimed 31st while Steele claimed 33rd place.

Emily Chaires, Hallie Martinez and Casey Gilbert finished in 55th, 56th and 57th positions, respectively, with Chaires crossing the line in 27:50.2, Martinez in 28:30.2 and Gilbert in 28:43.8.

Esmeralda Rosas (66th – 36:30.0), Sanjana Nittala (67th – 36:56.4) and Meghana Nittala (69th – 38:00.3) were the final three from Southwestern to finish the course.

Colorado College's Elliot Singer was the only runner in the event to run less than 23:00 as she finished with an astounding time of 22:55.2 to earn the medalist honors.
