Pair of Pirates race to season best times

PFLUGERVILLE – Lilly Duarte raced to a Southwestern University cross country 5k record Friday evening finishing second at the Concordia Invitational held at Northeast Metro Park.

Duarte broke Mary Mayes record set in 1999 as she finished second with a time of 18:13.15. Brenda Felipe – who ran unattached – posted a first place time of 17:36.92 to win the race.

Kara Koinis also earned a personal best mark this season in a 5000-meter cross country race as she covered the course in a time of 19:32.12 to finish 10th. Koinis and Duarte were the only Pirate runners to finish in the top 30 where Emily Ammon checked in with a time of 21:16.33.

Texas Lutheran took home the team title followed by Trinity in second and Concordia in third. Southwestern finished fourth ahead of Northwood in the team standings.

The Pirates take a week off before heading to the 2013 SCAC Championships hosted by Centenary College. The championships are set for Nov. 2 in Shreveport, La.
