Podium appearances abound on day three

Southwestern maintained second and third place, respectively, in men's and women's team standings but had multiple top five finishes during day three of the SCAC Championships.

Natalie Lesnick started the finals with a second place finish in the 400 IM, shaving seven seconds off her seed time to finish in 4:41.03. Alex Morris took fifth in the event in 4:48.47.

In the men's edition, SU placed second and third with Alex Villarreal finishing in 4:06.89 for and NCAA "B" cut and second place and Ty Lapiniski snagging third in 4:12.48.

Blythe Nava and Kenly Gaynor went four, five in the 100 fly final. Nava finished in 59.85 and Gaynor in 59.91 to earn 29 points for Southwestern. Simmon Belaineh was the only male swimmer to make the finals and finished in fourth with a time of 51.72.

Matt Sluss got the first gold of the day for the Pirates, winning the 200 free in 1:41.78, nearly one second ahead of his nearest competitor. Michael Glover took third in the event by shaving almost two seconds off his time to finish in 1:42.87.

Taylor Adams finished in sixth in the 100 breast in 1:10.53 and Marissa Byrd seventh in 1:11.03. Mickey Scharbrough took second in the men's 100 breast with a time of 58.39 while Simon Gersib finished in seventh in 59.80.

Julian Smith, Nathan Townsend and Andy Seymour had a strong showing in the 100 back, bringing home second, seventh and eighth place. Smith finished in 51.54, Townsend 53.72 and Seymour 54.57.

The highlight of the day was during the final race as the Southwestern men's "A" team won the 400 medley relay. Smith, Scharbrough, Sluss, and Belaineh led from the start and battled for the important win, taking gold in 3:25.85.

After day three, Southwestern men have 546 points and trail Trinity by 40 points while the women are in third with 432 points
