Football Breaks Record, Eight Forced Turnovers Against Millsaps

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Football traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to take on the Millsaps College Majors at 1:00 PM on Saturday. On the way to a 42-13 victory over the Majors, the Pirates caused havoc all over the field, forcing eight turnovers throughout the game against Millsaps.

The contest did not start out easy for the Pirates as they found themselves down 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Majors kicked a field goal to start the scoring for both teams and later found a touchdown with ten minutes left to go in the first.

The Southwestern offense exploded in the second quarter, scoring thirty-five points and stunning the Majors. Freshman quarterback Jaylen Spriggs accounted for five touchdowns in the second quarter alone, rushing for three and throwing for two. In total, Spriggs threw for 162 yards and rushed for twenty-seven. Utility men for Southwestern, Kolby Bartlett and Samuel Johnson, were on the receiving end of Sprigg's two touchdown passes in the second combining for forty-one yards on the two passes. The Southwestern defense shut out Millsaps in the second quarter leading to a 35-10 halftime lead for the Pirates.

Nine minutes into the third quarter the Pirates strung together a six-play fifty-two yard drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown run from Leroy Rodriguez, pulling the score to 42-10 for the Pirates. The Southwestern defense again shut out Millsaps for the second quarter in a row.

The Pirates would not add to the lead for the rest of the third and did not manage to score in the fourth quarter. All the Majors could do was add a field goal in the fourth bringing the final margin to 42-13. Southwestern went five for five on all of their red zone chances in the game.

The Southwestern defense was the story of the afternoon breaking a school record for forced turnovers with eight. The Pirates intercepted four passes thanks to Peyton Ludemann, J.P. Reyes, Felipe Olvera, and Quincy Nevins. Jason Lund forced two fumbles while collecting a career-high four sacks and five tackles for loss in total. Four different Pirates recovered fumbles on the afternoon including Joseph Nielsen, Jake Sefzik, Ethan Mills and Blane Corekin. Millsap's turnovers directly led to thirty-five points for the Pirates and a dominant win for Southwestern.

The Pirate's final game of the season will take place at home against the Sewanee Tigers on Saturday, November 11th at 12:00 PM. The Pirates will honor their seniors with a ceremony before the game.
