GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Football hosted the Trinity University Tigers for the first time since 2016, back when they defeated the Tigers 20-7 at Birkelbach Field on Homecoming. In a year where the Pirates took down the Tigers twice in the same season on their way to winning the SCAC Conference Championship, the Pirates couldn't fair as well in their contest on Saturday.
Southwestern held the Tigers to just seven points in the first quarter of the contest with the touchdown coming on the first drive of the game for the Tigers by way of eight plays in just over four minutes of game time. From then on in the first, the Pirates and Tigers exchanged possessions and a pair of missed field goals for both sides. The Southwestern defense held strong in the first against the number six team in the country.
The Tiger's offense began to click in the second quarter, again driving down the field in eight plays over the course of eighty yards scoring a touchdown, but a missed field goal for the Tigers led to just a 13-0 lead. A few minutes later the lead would extend to 19 points for Trinity barring a missed two-point conversion try. After a crucial third down stop for the Pirates on defense, the Tigers pulled a fake punt out of their bag of tricks which ultimately led to a long touchdown run from the upback. Feeling a sense of urgency after the long fake punt touchdown, the Southwestern offense strung together an eight-play 75-yard drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown run from running back Kolby Bartlett.
A field goal at the end of the half for Trinity gave them a 29-7 halftime lead.
The top ten ranked Trinity team came out of halftime and rolled on the rest of the way, not allowing the Pirates to score again for the remainder of the game while continuing to score on offense. The final tally would reach 57-7 in favor of the Tigers at Birkelbach Field in the renewal contest of former foes.
On defense, senior defensive back Peyton Ludemann led the team with eleven tackles. DJ James and Jameer Martin both had great days in pass defense, breaking up two and three passes respectively. In total, the Pirate front accumulated five tackles for loss for nine yards as well as seven pass breakups in the back end.
Southwestern Football will enjoy the bye-week as they try to regain the health of many injured players on their roster.
