GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern football team was unable to get anything going offensively against a stout Berry College Vikings team, who came into the game receiving Top 25 votes and coming off a close contest to Trinity University.
Long-sustaining drives by the Vikings were the story of the game as they continually were able to drive the length of the field amassing a total of 27 first downs in the contest. The Pirate defense held tough, limiting big plays, however, they were unable to get off the field on third down as the Vikings had an almost 70 percent third down efficiency compared to the Pirates 35 percent.
Kicker Charlie Fournier and wide receiver Dugan Sexton were the scorers for the Pirates, the ten points coming from a 35-yard Fournier field goal and a 28-yard pass from Damian Gomez to Sexton late in the fourth quarter. The Sexton touchdown capped off a 10-play five-minute drive to end the day on offense.
Defensively, Jake Sefzik notched ten total tackles from the linebacker spot followed by eight tackles from Peyton Ludemann and Aleksander Gomez respectively. Defensive end Jason Lund tallied 1.5 tackles for loss while cornerback DJ James and Jameer Martin were credited with two pass breakups. In a tough day at Birkelbach field for Southwestern, the final score rounded out to 52-10 in favor of the Vikings.
Southwestern will be on the road in Kentucky to take on Centre College on Saturday, October 14th at 12:00 PM CDT.
