BROWNWOOD, Texas – Landry Gilpin threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Southwestern University football team fell to Howard Payne University 48-17 at Gordon Wood Stadium on Saturday.
Gilpin completed 24 of his 39 pass attempts including six to Ethan Powell for 150 yards and two touchdowns as well as 10 completions to Jojo Wilson for 93 yards.
HPU (6-1, 5-0 ASC), however, forced Gilpin into throwing five interceptions and held the Pirates running attack to just 36 yards on 28 carries to stay unbeaten in the American Southwest Conference with matchups against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Hardin-Simmons looming large in the coming weeks.
Southwestern (2-4, 1-3 ASC) fell behind 24-0 before putting its first points on the scoreboard with 4:37 left in the first half when Gilpin found Powell on what should have been a first down catch, but Powell was able to zigzag his way through the Jackets defense and outrun everyone to the endzone for a 64-yard touchdown.
HPU extended the lead out to 34-7 with a late first half field goal and a touchdown run a minute into the third quarter.
Gilpin then found Powell for a second touchdown toss with this one being from 23 yards out. Charlie Fournier's extra point kick was good cutting the deficit to 34-14.
A pair of fourth quarter touchdowns from the Jackets from 16 yards out each concluded HPU's scoring as Southwestern's Fournier kicked a 36-yard field goal with 2:11 to go for the game's final score.
Southwestern equaled the first down output of HPU with 20 each but could not get the running game going to set up more of the passing game.
