GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Pirates were met with a staunch offensive and defensive effort from the Centre College Colonels on Saturday in Danville, Kentucky. The Colonels put up forty-five points in the contest with thirty-one of those coming in the first half.
In the second drive of the game, the Pirates threw a pick-six interception on just the second play of the drive, giving the Colonels a 7-0 lead with just over three minutes gone in the first half. Centre would tack on a field goal late in the half to give them a 10-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
Centre extended their lead to a three-score game extending their drive at the end of the first quarter into the second period, going 12 plays, 72 yards in five and a half minutes. On the ensuing drive, the Pirates yet again threw a pick-six that gave Centre a 24-0 lead, seemingly putting the game out of reach early on.
Despite the two interceptions, freshman quarterback Jaylen Spriggs responded well the next drive out and drove the Pirates 75 yards down the field in eleven plays for a Pirate touchdown, ran in by Spriggs himself. The scoring drive would be answered right back for the Colonels, eventually leading to a halftime total of 31-7, Colonels.
The Pirates would be skunked in the scoring column in the third quarter and Centre continued to pile on the lead with another touchdown. In the fourth, the Pirates elected to go to senior quarterback Damian Gomez and it ultimately led to a touchdown on the Pirates opening drive of the fourth quarter from the quarterback. Southwestern cut the lead to 38-14 and would go on to score one more touchdown in the fourth, however, it would not be enough and the final tally would draw in favour of Centre, 21-45. Besides the two quarterbacks, wide receiver Coleman Robertson made good on his one catch of the afternoon, taking it 17 yards for a touchdown.
Southwestern is back at home next Saturday to take on old Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe, Trinity University. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
