Castilleja Headlines Southwestern Football All-ASC Selections

Today, the American Southwest Conference (ASC) announced its 2021 All-Conference Football Team, awarding seven Southwestern football players with all-conference honors, headlined by senior Austin Castilleja's two selections as a slotback and return specialist. 

Castilleja was an All-ASC Second Team selection as a slotback with 31 receptions for 480 yards and eight touchdowns, recording two 100-yard receiving games, including a career-best 180 yards against McMurry, and three games with multiple touchdowns. This award marks Castilleja's second consecutive All-ASC Second Team selection. 

The senior from San Antonio, Texas, was also awarded All-ASC Third Team honors as a return specialist, totaling 396 kick return yards on 21 attempts with a long of 43 yards. 

Southwestern had three defensive players and punter Wil Herbst earn All-ASC Third Team selections. Sophomore defensive end Jason Lund recorded 32 tackles, including 4.5 for a combined loss of 27 yards with 1.5 sacks for a loss of 13 yards. He also forced one fumble, blocked a kick, and broke up two passes. 

Senior linebacker Bernard Sencherey had 58 tackles, of which 34 were unassisted. He had 8.5 tackles for a combined loss of 26 yards, including 1.5 sacks for a loss of nine yards. In addition, Sencherey had one fumble recovery returned 50 yards for a touchdown against Texas Lutheran, earning ASC Defensive Player of the Week. 

Junior defensive back Elijah Norris posted 47 tackles, including 34 unassisted with two interceptions. He also broke up nine passes. 

Junior quarterback Landry Gilpin and senior offensive tackle Charles De La Rosa were awarded All-ASC Honorable Mention. Gilpin was a two-time ASC Offensive Player of the Week for his performances in wins over Belhaven and Austin College. The dual-threat quarterback completed 126-of-248 passes for 1,558 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also finished with 136 carries for 676 yards and four touchdowns. De La Rosa earns his second All-ASC Honorable Mention selection after anchoring an offensive line composed of mostly freshmen. 

Senior defensive tackle Nick Hackett was named to the Outstanding Sportsman Team of the Year. 

Southwestern finished the season 4-6 with a 4-5 conference record, ending the season on a three-game winning streak.
