The American Southwest Conference (ASC) named Southwestern football's Landry Gilpin and J.J. Slack its Players of the Week for their performances in the Pirates' 34-27 victory over the Belhaven Blazers.
Gilpin directed the Pirate offense with 19-of-31 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions to win ASC Offensive Player of the Week. He also rushed for a game-high 112 yards on 19 carries with a score. In addition, the Pirates' junior quarterback made several clutch plays, including two drive-extending fourth-down plays.
Slack earned a share of the Special Teams Player of the Week Award along with Mary Hardin-Baylor's Jefferson Fritz. Slack blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown, blocked an extra point, and recovered a fumble.
Southwestern improved to 1-1 with the victory and will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 7:00 p.m.
