LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Southwestern University seniors Justin Broussard and Matt Gillen earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors after each posted record-setting performances, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. Broussard captured the defensive honor, while Gillen was honored on the offensive side.
It marked the second consecutive honor for Broussard, who set the conference single-game record with 5.5 sacks in Southwestern's 48-0 victory at Trinity on Saturday. The Beaumont native also tallied nine tackles, two quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.
Gillen, a wide receiver from Coppell, hauled five receiving touchdowns, which set a league single-game record. He posted nine catches for 135 yards and scored three of his five touchdowns in the first half.
The Pirates (3-3, 2-0 SCAC) host Texas Lutheran (2-4, 2-0 SCAC) in a battle for first place at 6 p.m. Saturday.
