Trinity hands Pirates loss on Homecoming

Trinity hands Pirates loss on Homecoming

Southwestern fell behind early and was not able to catch-up as they lost 38-18 on Homecoming night to Trinity Saturday in Georgetown.

Trinity struck first with a 6-play, 80-yard drive in the first quarter and added another touchdown in the second quarter to send Southwestern into the locker room down 14-0 at the half.

The Pirates cut into the lead in the third, however, needing just two plays to score on a four yard touchdown pass from Bryan Hicks to Micah Sherman. The extra point was no good, leaving Southwestern trailing 14-6.

Trinity had the immediate answer, however, with a 90-yard kickoff return by Desmond King to put TU up 21-6 with just under nine minutes to play in the third.

The teams traded passing touchdowns as Mason Blaschke found Matt Kennemer for the Tigers and Sherman and Hicks teamed up again for Southwestern to bring the score to 28-12 at the end of three.

A Payton Kisor field goal followed by a passing touchdown from nine yards out to Chaz Davis put Southwestern down 38-12 with nine minutes to play.

SU had the final scoring drive, closing the game with a rushing touchdown by Dylan Wilburn from one yard out, capping a six play, 27-yard drive.

The Pirates were tough in the backfield defensively, notching four interceptions including two by Taylor Fann. Zach Cole posted 12 tackles on the night including 1.5 for a loss.

Bryan Hicks was 24-35 for 201 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Mason Blaschke went 6-18 for 105 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions for the Tigers.

On the ground, Trinity's Jeremy Simmons had a huge night with 215 yards on 24 carries with one touchdown.

Southwestern falls to 1-7 on the year and 0-2 in the SCAC after the loss while Trinity improves to 3-6 overall, 1-1 in the SCAC. The Pirates close the season next Saturday, facing SCAC top-ranked opponent Texas Lutheran in Seguin. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
