Rogers and Hicks earn SCAC honors after win

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Tanner Rogers and Bryan Hicks were each honored Monday being named SCAC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week as announced by the league office.

Rogers led a Southwestern defense that forced seven turnovers to take a 27-20 win over Sul Ross State, the Pirates first win in the sport of football since 1950. The Bedford, Texas, native finished with a game-high 11 tackles and had a huge presence in the backfield and secondary coming through with a pick-six; however the return for a touchdown was waived off, but still set up a Pirate touchdown just two plays later.

Rogers also added one sack and four tackles for loss with two quarterback hurries in the Pirate victory.

Hicks played a huge role in special teams, helping flip field position for a Southwestern defense that was equally impressive on Saturday.

The Humble, Texas, native had two punts in the game, averaging 46.5 yards per punt with two punts landing inside the 20. He added a long punt of 55 yards as well.

Hicks also threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns at quarterback, accounting for all four scores for the Pirates.

Southwestern hits the road for the first time in 2014 as the Pirates take on East Texas Baptist Saturday in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Marshall, Texas.
