Pirates use personal best times to claim top 5 finish

SHREVEPORT, La. – Alex Medrano earned All-SCAC honors to help the Southwestern University men's cross country team to a fourth place team finish Saturday at the 2013 SCAC Championships.

Six of the seven Pirate runners raced to personal best times Saturday as Medrano's 11th place finish earned the junior all-conference accolades. Medrano covered the 8k course with a time of 27:29.8 while teammate Joe Sponsel also finished in the top 20 racing to a time of 29:19.7 to finish 18th.

Alec Bergerson just missed a top 20 finish as he crossed the finish line with a time of 30:28.0 to check in 21st.

Philip Davis was the only Pirate to not earn a personal best time as he was just behind Bergerson with a time of 30:55.0 to finish 24th.

Trinity edged Colorado College for the team title as Taylor Piske claimed individual honors for the Tigers as well. University of Dallas finished just ahead of the Pirates in third as host Centenary College rounded out the top five.

Southwestern will head to the NCAA III South/Southeast Regional in Chesapeake, Va., November 16. The regional is hosted by Christopher Newport University as the Pirates will try to earn a berth at the NCAA III National Championships in Hanover, Indiana November 23.
