Wood highlights day two in Arkansas with record time

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Southwestern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued action on Friday against top teams from NCAA Division I, II and III at the UALR Christmas Invitational.

The Pirate women picked up nine season best times on Friday while the men saw 10 season best times fall including one school record. Along with UALR several top NCAA II teams added to the tough competition including 2013 NCAA II National Champion Drury University.

Kyler Wood highlighted action for the Pirates on Thursday as the junior picked up a NCAA "B" cut in 100-yard breaststroke earning a fourth place finish. Wood swam to a time of 57.54 which broke the school record set by the Georgetown native last season. He also earned a season best time in the 50-yard freestyle as he finished with a time of 21.32.

A quartet of Pirates also swam to top 10 finishes in the pool. Shelby Hall and Evan Jones picked up sixth and eighth place finishes respectively in the 500-yard freestyle. Hall finished with a time of 4:44.82 which was a season best, while Jones' time of 4:48.43 was also a season best for the first-year from San Antonio.

Ty Lapinski earned a seventh place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.03. Lapinski also finished with a time of 4:57.23 in the 500-yard freestyle giving the junior a pair of season best times on Thursday.

The Pirate men also earned a season best time in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.20.

On the women's side Emily Haskell led the way with a sixth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Haskell and Alex Morris gave Southwestern a pair of top 10 finishes on Thursday after Morris swam to an eighth place finish in the 400 individual medley.

Emmy Gradisar gave the Pirate women a third top 10 finish as she finished tenth in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:21.39 was also a season best in the event.

The evening session of Friday's action was canceled while Saturday will be timed finals starting at noon.
