
SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University Pirates earned five first-place finishes including a record setting time in the first action of the season from the pool for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams Saturday in a dual-meet with Trinity University at Hixon Natatorium.
The Pirate women were led by the relay team of Madison Doty, Emily Haskell, Kenly Gaynor and Blythe Nava in the 200-yard medley. The group bested the in-season school record by two seconds with a time of 1:54.85 to finish second in the race.
Doty and Gaynor also earned a pair of first-place finishes for the Pirates as Doty raced to a win in the 100-yard backstroke while Gaynor took home the title in the 100-yard butterfly. Gaynor raced to a time of 2:18.94 as Doty picked up a time of 1:01.68. Doty also finished second for Southwestern in the 100-yard freestyle.
The trio of Haskell, Doty and Gaynor joined Sarah Alpini in the 400-yard freestyle relay to earn a second place finish with a time of 3:49.30.
Southwestern finished just behind Trinity in the team standings as the Tigers picked up the first win with a 215-77 advantage. The Pirate men also fell to the Tigers as Trinity edged Southwestern 188-107 in the team standings.
Individually, the Pirate men picked up three first place finishes led by Kyler Wood's win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.20. His time of 2:13.84 also gave the junior a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke dominating the event.
Wood also helped pace the 200-yard medley relay team to a first place finish with teammates Evan Jones, Ty Lapinski and Dylan Johnson. The relay team raced to a time of 1:40.88 to claim the win.
Shelby Hall earned the fourth win for the Pirates claiming a first place time of 4:54.39 in the 500-yard freestyle. Hall completed his solid afternoon picking up a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.90.
Southwestern also got a solid performance in the butterfly from Evan Jones. Jones finished second in both the 200-yard and 100-yard butterfly with times of 2:03.69 and 54.81, respectively.
Both Pirate men's and women's teams return to the pool November 9 as they host their first dual-meet of the season against NCAA-II McMurry.
