Pirates Fall From SCAC Tourney After Opening Round Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Southwestern defeated Centenary College 3-0 in the opening round of the SCAC Conference Tournament but fell 3-0 to Trinity to fall into the third place match.

The Pirates were strong against Centenary as they took the opening set 25-11. Southwestern's balanced attack kept the Ladies guessing while SU's defense never let Centenary get on a run as they took the second set 25-18 and third set 25-16.

Kaitlyn Foster led the attack with nine kills and a .412 attack percentage while Lorin Froetschel added in eight. Lacey Strickland kept the Pirates' attack firing with 30 assists. Elizabeth Sandoval had a big defensive game with 13 digs and Strickland added in 11.

The win set the Pirates up against SCAC conference-rival Trinity, who earned a first round bye after ending the regular season in second place. Trinity came out hot and pounded the ball as they posted a .414 attack percentage to win the opening set 25-16. Southwestern fought back in the second set and stayed steady on their attack, but the Tigers beat the Pirates to the punch for a 25-23 set two win.

Southwestern struggled to get their offense going in the third set and were held to a -.023 attack percentage as Trinity closed out the match by winning the third set 25-14.
