GEORGETOWN, TEXAS- Southwestern Volleyball faced off against the Colorado College Tigers for the Quarterfinal Match in the 2023 SCAC Volleyball Tournament in Georgetown, TX.
In front of their hometown crowd, the Pirates jumped out and willed themselves to victory, 27-25 in set one. Despite not winning a single set against the Tigers in the regular season, the Pirates took a 2-0 lead after winning set two, 25-23.
"Matches like these are what make college volleyball meaningful and real. We want to be in these types of matches and these types of environments. Our staff, our students, our SU athletic department backed these students-athletes to the end. We competed and put it all out on the court," recaps Head Coach Don Flora.
The Tigers came back and evened up the match, 2-2. The fifth set was back and forth, but ultimately, the Tigers completed their comeback and won the final set, 16-14.
"We blocked and defended at a high level throughout this match. When matches are played by two quality teams, the margins get small. And tonight's match proved that theory," concludes Coach Flora.
Christina Kuras led the Pirates with 15 kills, while Geneva Nedrow finished the match with a team-high 35 digs. Andie Valenzuela and Lily McWhorter each earned 9 kills. Annika Flora finished the night with 20 assists, 6 kills, and 14 digs. As a whole, the Pirates out-blocked the Tigers, 10-4.
