GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University Volleyball team was unable to come up with a win in their two-game series against the University of St. Thomas Celts. But, the weekend was highlighted by Junior Libero Geneva Nedrow, who eclipsed 1,000 digs in her career and set a new career high with 42 in their contest on against the Celts on Friday night.
Southwestern fell to a two-set deficit on Friday night before taking a set from the Celts in the third. The Pirates and Celts battled hard in the fourth set forcing the Celts to score 27 points before St. Thomas would ultimately take the first victory of the weekend. The Pirates were unable to get anything going offensively as only one Pirate, Christina Kuras, would pass double-digit kills.
"We were unable to get a rhythm started early in this match. There were a number of mistakes that hampered the way we needed to run the offense early tonight. We need to have a collective effort to be engaged intentionally, each point that we compete, in each set," describes Coach Flora.
"We continue to do some quality things behind our block and Geneva set a new career match record of digs (42), which she previously set a program record last weekend."
Southwestern would have a fresh opportunity against the Celts on Saturday afternoon.
However, the offensive woes would continue for the Pirates, only scoring 12 points in the first set of the day. The Pirates would fare better in the second set, coming up with 15 kills as a team but falling 23-25 in the set. Riding a five-to-one set advantage over Southwestern for the weekend, St. Thomas took the final third set 25-17.
Southwestern heads to Texas Lutheran University for a SCAC Crossover event where they take on the University of Dallas on Friday, October 6th at 1:15 PM.
