GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Pirate swept the first two games in the SCAC Divisional Crossovers by pulling a 4-1 set win over Johnson & Wales and a 3-0 win over Centenary College.

Game 1: Southwestern vs. Johnson & Wales

Sets: 25-10, 25-16, 27-25, 25-14

 For the first match in the SCAC Divisional Crossover, Southwestern faced off against Johnson and Wales and wasted no time gaining the lead. In the first set, the Pirates took a significant lead that helped them take the set 25-10. Senior Jamison Duck kept a strong serve for the Pirates while Freshman Makenzie Mendez set up the offense that helped give Pirates the lead 11-1 to help win the first set 25-10. In the second the Pirates once again kept the lead and won the set 25-16 over the Wildcats.

 However, in the third set, the Wildcats fought back to keep themselves in the game. As the Wildcats battled the Pirates to 27-25, the Pirates made more errors in the third set and the Wildcats the win. The Pirates came back strong to finish the game in the fourth set. With the offense on the attack and the defense ready, the Pirates finished the last set 25- 14, giving them the win over Johnson and Wales.

Standout players of the night included freshman Ashley Whitlock who helped offensively with a total of 12 kills and one block. Also, freshman Lauren Crabtree had a total of 10 kills and 8 eight digs, while senior Jamison Duck had a high of 14 kills and two digs.

On the defense, freshman, Makenzie Mendez had a total of 24 digs and Brandi Campos had 19 digs.

Game 1: Southwestern vs. Centenary College

Sets: 25-21, 25-18, 25-18

The final game for the day, the Pirates were able to sweep Centenary 3-0 to have them go 2-0 in the tournament. Each set, Centenary was close behind the Pirates, in the first set the Ladies played neck and neck with the Pirates up to 18-18. Freshman Alyssa Dooley helped make big kills for the Pirates to pull ahead and win the first set. The last two sets the Pirates would lead Centenary to finish Saturday with two Pirate wins.

Dooley had a high of 13 kills along with Ashley Whitlock who had 12 kills.  Jamison Duck had ten kills and six digs with Brandi Campos who had 20 digs. 

Don Flora comments, "Today we grew a bit as a team in our focus, our decision-making attacking, and that we were emotionally connected.  Also, some key areas of training this last week really transferred to our game-day style of play."

Flora also says "The coaching staff was proud of the resolve and sticking to the offensive game plan throughout a quality three-set match vs. Centenary.  We served and passed at a higher level than some recent matches."

The next games in the Tournament will take place tomorrow Sunday, Sept. 23rd against Dallas and No. 2 Colorado College.
