#7 Pirates Cruise Through Day One at Halloween Tournament

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern volleyball team put their skills on display on day on at the Schlotzsy's Halloween Tournament, defeating Clarkson and the University of Texas Dallas 3-0. The Pirates, ranked in the top 10 in assists, digs and kills, were unstoppable and pushed their win streak to 17.

The Pirates jumped out of the gate, winning 25-16 in the first set over Clarkson University out of New York. Stifling blocking was the key to the win in set two as Lorin Froetschel, Allison Stubbs and Jill Wigington kept the Golden Knights' attack at bay to take a commanding 13-4 lead. 

Some uncharacteristically-sloppy play allowed the Golden Knights to make a comeback, pulling within four points, 14-10. After a timeout the Pirates righted the ship and pushed to the finish to win the second set, 25-17.

Clarkson put up a fight in the third set, attempting to steal a game from the mighty Pirates, leading briefly 15-14. Southwestern rose to the occasion regaining the lead on a big kill down the line by Wigington and drove to the finish 25-20 to win the match 3-0.

The final match of the evening pitted the Pirates against American Southwest Conference powerhouse UT Dallas. Southwestern came out strong and used every weapon in their arsenal to take the set one win 25-22.

SU rode the wave through the second set, taking an easy 25-17 victory, and jumped out to an early lead in the third, 8-5. With the team firing on all cylinders the Pirates cruised to the 3-0 match victory with a 25-17 win in set three.

The pair of wins put the Pirates at 26-2 on the year. They face Concordia at noon and St. Thomas at 6pm for the second day of action at the SU Halloween Tournament.
