#7 Pirates Pull Out Gutsy Win Over SCAC Rival

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The #7 Pirates closed out the SCAC West Divisional #2 with two wins to remain unbeaten in conference play, beating the University of Dallas 3-0 before winning 3-2 over Trinity in a gutsy nightcap.

The Pirates opened the day with the University of Dallas and after getting off to a slow start bounced back to form to win 25-22, 25-18, 25-19.

After a one game break, Southwestern got back to work facing SCAC-conference rival Trinity. The always highly anticipated match-up went as expected with both teams bringing their best game to the floor.

Southwestern jumped out to an early lead with strong serves and led by five at the midway point of the first set, 13-8. The Pirates continued to press for points with aces and kills, mounting a ten point lead, 20-10, with five points to go forcing a Trinity timeout. SU was too far out in front for TU to catch as the Pirates won the first set 25-17.

It was all Trinity at the beginning of set two as the Tigers jumped out in front by five, 6-1. Behind the arms of Allison Stubbs and Lauren Froetschel the Pirates steadily chipped away at the lead until they pulled even, 12-12, on an ace by Sarai Tenerelli and took control on Froetschel's tip.

Big digs by Chandler Lentz (pictured) in the backrow allowed the Pirates to pull ahead 17-12, forcing two Trinity timeouts. The Tigers came surging back to tie the set once again 21-21. With the count tied for the fifth time TU was able to pull out the win by capitalizing on SU's mishits to win 27-25 and tie the game at one each.

Trinity kept the momentum on their side as the Pirates were never able to get in the game and dropped the third set 25-15.

TU continued to ride the wave into the fourth set and once again took an early lead, but the Pirates lurked in the shadows and eventually took the lead, 13-12, at the halfway point after a long rally.

A great backrow kill by Rachel Thibodeau put the Pirates at 20 points (20-16) and the team pushed to the finish to win 25-18, forcing a fifth and final set.

The fifth set began as expected, with the two teams trading points, racing to be the first to 15. Southwestern pulled ahead slightly, 6-4, but the Tigers refused to go away and brought the game even 7-7.

After another tie TU took the lead back 10-9 as the match wound to a close. Neither team was able to pull away as the 15th point approached. Thibodeau's kill off the Tiger block put SU back on top, 12-11, and two more kills by the outside hitter put the Pirates within one point of the comeback win, 14-11.

A big block by Trinity kept their hopes alive, but Taylor Wright's kill ended the match 15-12 to keep the Pirates undefeated in conference.

Southwestern remains at home to host their annual Halloween Tournament next weekend against national competition, opening with Clarkson University on Friday at 3pm.
