#9 Volleyball Slams Competition at SCAC Divisional

Southwestern's dominance continues to grow as the season goes on as evidenced by four wins at the SCAC Divisional in San Antonio, never dropping a set as they defeated Oglethorpe, Sewanee, Centre and Birmingham Southern 3-0 to improve to 21-2 on the year and remain perfect in conference with an 11-0 record.

SU posted a .309 team hitting percentage in their opener against Oglethorpe in Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-20 win. First-year Elizabeth Sandoval made a name for herself with 13 kills in 22 attempts with just two errors to lead the attack while also leading defensively with 14 digs. 

The defense took over in the second match of the afternoon as the Pirates held Sewanee to just .074 attack percentage and kept the Tigers from scoring 20 points in any set en route to a 25-19, 25-11, 25-18 win. Sandoval posted a team high 13 kills while four other Pirates logged five or more kills in the match. Christina Nicholls kept the attack strong with 33 assists. Sarai Tenerelli posted a team high 14 digs and was supported by Sandoval's 12 digs.

Sunday SU picked up where they left off on day two and despite being challenged by Centre were able to dig down and fight to the finish, winning 25-21, 25-21, 25-20. Sandoval once again led the attack with 13 kills and was supported by Rachel Thibodeau's 11.Thibodeau led the way defensively with 16 digs while Nicholls added in 14 digs to go with her 28 assists.

The Pirates amped up their already high-powered offense and turned up the defense as well to face Birmingham-Southern for the final game. The Pirates posted a .316 hitting percentage while holding BSC to just .061 to win 25-15, 25-15, 25-16. Thibodeau had 14 kills while Jill Wigington posted 10. Nicholls recorded 31 assists and 10 digs, tying digs leaders Tenerelli and Allison Stubbs who also had 10 digs in the match.

The Pirates have some much deserved down time with an off week before returning to SCAC Conference action at home on October 21-22.
