BROWN SHINES IN FINAL HOME MATCHES, PIRATES WIN TWO

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Senior Lauren Brown (picture, left) was sensational in her final tournament at home as a Pirate as Southwestern defeated the University of St. Thomas 3-0 and Texas Lutheran 3-1 in the final day of action at the annual Halloween Tournament.

The Pirates picked right up where they left off, easily defeating St. Thomas in their opening match on day two. Southwestern never allowed the Celts into the contest as they won in three straight games, 25-20, 25-15, 25-12.

Lauren Brown led the way with 12 kills while Allison Stubbs recorded seven. Lindsay Thompson and Jill Wigington each had three blocks to lead the way. Stubbs was also the leader in aces with three and digs with 16. Rachel Thibodeau and Christina Nicholls each had 14 digs in the match.

In the final match of the day SU faced Texas Lutheran once again this season and came out strong, winning game one 25-15. The Bulldogs turned up the heat in the second game as the teams were locked at 17 a piece. Solid blocking by the Pirates pushed them to a three point lead 21-18 and Southwestern cruised from there as they closed out game two 25-20 on a kill by Thompson.

SU went on a 4-0 run to start the third game but TLU slowly inched back into the contest, tying the game at 7-7. The Bulldogs inched ahead at 18-16 but Southwestern fought to even the count 22-22. In the closing points of the game the Pirates weren't able to get a crucial side out as they fell 25-23.

Southwestern jumped out to an early lead again in game four, 7-2, only this time they refused to relinquish the lead as the point total continued to climb. The Pirates ultimately closed out the game and match 25-16.

Brown and Christina Nicholls were named to the All-Tournament team with Brown earning MVP honors. Lycoming's Emily Abel, UT Tyler's Danika Waldrop, Eastern's Courtney Reinhold and Mary Horning and St. Thomas' Casey Mulryan rounded out the All-Tournament selections.

After the weekend of wins the Pirates improve to 29-5 on the year. They head to San Antonio, Texas next weekend to defend their SCAC title at the 2010 SCAC Conference Championship. They are the second seed in the tournament after a tie-breaker with Colorado College. Their first game will be on Friday, November 5th against the winner of #7 seed Centre and #10 seed Oglethorpe who play at 2pm.
