LEXINGTON, KY (July 13, 2023) — The United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced today that 1,333 collegiate and high school volleyball teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award this season. This marks an all-time record number of programs honored for their academic achievements. Southwestern University Volleyball was one of the collegiate teams to be honored with the award. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.

Pirate Volleyball was also honored with the distinction of "Team Academic Honor Roll" which highlights teams in the top 20% of GPAs in their division. Southwestern was one of 46 teams, and the only Division III university in Texas to receive the "Team Academic Honor Roll" distinction. The Volleyball team maintained a 3.84 GPA in the spring semester, far and above exceeding the team's desired goal of a 3.5
