Campos Named Backrow Player of the Year; Four Named to All-SCAC Team

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - In exclusive all‐conference voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Brandi Campos of No. 3 ranked Southwestern University was selected SCAC Backrow Player‐of‐the‐Year while Campos, along with three other SCAC volleyball student-athletes, were named to the All-SCAC Team.

Seniors Kate Mitchell and Piper Sisemore were named to the first team while Campos, as well as junior Megan Grimes, were named to the second team.

"I believe we are blessed to have some recognition for the entire team and for these four athletes as they receive these SCAC All-Conference selections," said Head Coach Don Flora.

Campos, a junior defensive specialist from San Antonio, Texas, was selected the league's Backrow Player-of-the-Year after leading the SCAC during the regular season in digs (558) and finishing second in digs per set (4.89). She was even more effective in conference competition, averaging 5.20 digs per set for the nationally third-ranked Pirates. She also added 35 service aces, the 11th most in the conference during the regular season. Campos was a SCAC Defensive POTW selection three times during the regular season.

Campos is the first Southwestern player to earn a SCAC Backrow Player-of-the-Year since all-American Samantha Lingamfelter won the award three straight years from 2007 to 2009. She received four votes from the coaches for the Backrow Player-of-the-Year honor. Sarah Mullens of Trinity picked up two votes from the coaches while Anna Gurolnick of Colorado College and Diana Hassink of the University of Dallas each received one first-place vote.

"The coaching staff and team are tremendously proud of Brandi and her seeing the fruits of her hard work helping her grow into the libero she is today," said Flora. "What a nice team and individual award for Brandi."

Mitchell, a senior outside hitter from Roseville, Calif., was the team leader in kills with 346, good for fourth in the conference throughout the season. Mitchell averaged 3.15 kills/set, which was fifth in the conference, and hit .312 on the season, good for sixth in the conference and among the top hitting outside hitters all throughout the season.

Mitchell was even better during conference season, leading the conference in kills (172), points (212.5), and points/set (4.1) while placing second kills/set (3.31). Mitchell was third in service aces with 29 and fifth in hitting percentage at .353.

Sisemore, a senior middle blocker out of Lago Vista, Texas, was one of the top blockers throughout the SCAC season, finishing third in block solos with 24 and fifth in block assists with 58. Sisemore's 12 block solos in conference play was the best in the SCAC.

Sisemore finished with 239 kills, good for fourth on the Pirates, to go with 2.25 kills/set. Sisemore was eighth in the SCAC in points with 319.0 throughout the entire season.

Grimes, a junior setter from Carrollton, Texas, led the SCAC both throughout the season and in conference play in assists, finsihing with 1151 total assists and 10.01 assists/set in the year while going for 575 assists in SCAC play and 10.65 assists/set.

Grimes also had 326 digs including 160 in conference play, good for 10th in the SCAC, as well as 127 total kills and 24 block assists.

"Megan has run a high level and balanced offense all season while Brandi has proven her ability to receive serve at an elite level and make some mystery digs to keep us in some sets," added Flora. "Our offense has many components to it, but Kate and Piper have carried a tremendous load each match. Having their offensive threat in numerous ways make this team hard to defend."

Southwestern concluded the regular season last weekend at 27-4 and will now prepare for the SCAC Championship in Kerrville, Texas. The Pirates, the No. 3 seed in the conference and No. 3 team in the nation, will open up against SCAC No. 6 seed Centenary on Friday afternoon at 1 PM. The winner of that match will move on to face SCAC No. 2 seed and No. 5 team in the nation Trinity on Saturday.

"It is an exciting time of the season and this team is proud of these SCAC All-Conference selections," said Flora.
