SCAC title slips out of Pirates’ grasp

San Antonio, Texas - Southwestern led 2-0 before Trinity came from behind to steal the SCAC title with a 3-2 victory over Southwestern.

The Pirates started strong, hitting .205 to easily win the first set 25-17.

With momentum on their side the Pirates continued to press and jumped out to an 11-6 lead to open the second set. Southwestern had a comfortable lead in hand and closed out the set 25-20.

Needing just one more set win to take the Championship, the Tigers began to claw their way back and led 11-7 in the third. SU closed the gap but were never able to take the lead as TU took the third set 25-19.

Trinity continued their run to opened set four with three straight points and never relinquished the lead, taking the fourth set 25-22 to force the decisive fifth set.

Southwestern started out with the lead but Trinity put together two three point rungs to go up 8-5, a lead that would remain the rest of the way as Trinity took the championship.

SU hit .113 as a team while Trinity was slightly better at .170. Kaitlyn Foster led offensively with 15 kills and a .228 attack percentage while also leading in digs with 27. Olivia Drummond added in 12 kills and a team high five blocks in the loss.

The Pirates end the season at 26-11 and with await their fate as they will rely on an automatic bid to earn their ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. The selection show will air on Monday.
